I think that if there were no horses in this world there would be no reason for breathing. It doesn’t matter what breed or color they are, they are all beautiful. Of course, like most people I have a favorite breed.

The Tennessee Walking Horse is the breed I like best. They have a great temperament and are so easy and smooth to ride. These horses were originally used by plantation owners to ride through the corn rows so they could check on the corn. Now they are used for pleasure riding and showing. Some are used by mounted police, also.

There are a lot of different breeds, it just depends on what you are going to use your horse for. The quarter horse is good for rodeos, ranch work, and pleasure riding. They are normally a stocky looking horse. Any horse can be taught to neck rein like the quarter horse but most horses can’t make the same kind of turns that quarter horses do. Quarter horses have a slow trot and a nice lope. They are fun and easy to ride.

Standard bred horses are usually high strung and beautiful to watch go through all their gaits. They have either three gaits or five gaits. Arabian horses are very beautiful and have three gaits. They are also smooth riding and are very graceful. Thoroughbreds are mainly used for racing and make good jumping horses. They love to run and are usually very fast.

The above are just a few of the most popular and well known breeds of horses, but there are many more. If you don’t have any particular breed in mind, look at and ride a lot of different breeds. Be sure to go to a reputable place and ask around about the person you are thinking of buying a horse from. Pick the one you really like and also when you have decided which one you want to buy, have a vet check it out.

Also, a mixed breed can make a great horse. I once had a half Tennessee Walking Horse and half Arabian, he was wonderful. He will always be my favorite horse. There is nothing better than owning a horse. I know because I have had many of them.

Something you should consider when buying a horse is, do you want a mare, gelding, or stallion? Mares can be temperamental, just like women. Stallions can be hard to handle, just like men. Geldings are usually the most easy to get along with, just like me, although I am a woman.

Until next time,

Rita

931.246.7376 (CST)
